Friedrich_Gray

2008 LMFF Designer Award Winner

After scoring the SOYA Fashion Award late last year, Sydney-based fashion designer Ben Pollitt can add another accolade to his already impressive resume. The self-taught designer of Friedrich Gray has taken out the title for the 2008 LMFF Designer Award presented by Woolmark and supported by Vogue Australia, during a special presentation at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
As part of his prestigious prize package, Woolmark awarded Pollitt with a $10,000 cash prize and a trip to Europe later in the year to introduce him to key contacts, including mills and fabric designers.
This year’s award winner was always going to be a difficult decision for judges to make, with seven of Australia’s rising fashion stars, including Gail Sorronda, Antipodium, Carl Kapp, Manning Cartell, Therese Rawsthorne and Thurley, all competing for the acclaimed prize.
Ultimately it was Pollitt’s unique A/W 2008 collection titled So We Dug A Tunnel, which won him the judges vote.
Ben Pollitt landed on fashion’s radar in early 2007 just a few seasons after launching his Friedrich Gray fashion label. With two influential awards under his belt and the ongoing support of the industry, this is one fashion wunderkind worth keeping an eye on. (March 5, 2008)

..and i totally got to see it =]

Role Play: Portrait Photography - NGV INternational 25Oct-6Apirl 08

so like..i walk in..and the first photo i see is 'The Cook' one of the pictures from the series The Resemblance, taken by ANNE ZAHAKLA.i was just like, ok i love this already.white walls & low level lighting created a calm quiet and mysterious mood which really emphasised alot of the mysitey from all the black & white and colour portraits.there were photographers from 1850 up till today with many known photographers like Cindy Sherman, August Sander and of course Anne Zahakla.

taken from the website..

Portrait photography is a complex and fascinating area of photographic practice that, at its heart, has a dynamic process of collaboration between the sitter, the viewer and the camera operator. In this exhibition, a provocative interchange between historical and contemporary photography has been created to suggest how photographers work to construct, question or reflect the notion of ‘role playing’.

Role Play contains three broad thematic groupings, namely allegorical portraiture (H.P Robinson, Julia Margaret Cameron, Cindy Sherman, William Wegman, Rose Farrell and George Parkin); portraits that either typecast or question social roles (August Sander, Edweard Muybridge, Anne Ferran); and theatrical photographs in which the sitter acts a role, (including G.B Poletto’s wardrobe photographs of Ava Gardner in On the Beach).

there was another room that we went to, i forgot the name..but there was 3 dresses designed and made by Hussein Chalayan, a designer from London, which were showcased in the spring/summer collection entitled Ventriloquy @ London Fashion week 2001.difnialty as the highlight of the day ahahaa.

its free entry so i highly recomndyou to go check it out.alot different stuff, but i guess thats what photographys about.

RUNWAY7_OYSTER

okaay last night..once again.amazing amazing amazing.presented by Oyster Magazine, so the crowd was alot more of the younger people..lots more guys (who i may add, lookeed very very good ahahaa) but yeaah was a heaps good runway.

designers on the runway were Alpha 60, Friedrich Gray, Kate Hurst, Leopold, Material Boy, Romance Was Born, Shakuhachi, SU and TV.

my favourite designers on the runway last night wer definatly Kate Hurst and Material Boy.Kate Hursts collection consisted of the blacks, dark blues, purples and silvers-althought there wer 2 dresses that looked identical but with different material, all her designers wer very girly and feminine, and i duno there was just somethign about it that i LOVED.and Material Boy..omg.most amazing runway ever.2 amazingly good looking males, with amazing bodys, in the tiniest briefs ever..walking onto the runway carrying this apple shaped massive thing, then some model crawls up n does this little dance n then the models start coming down..sounds pretty twisted buy faaaaaark it looked good.the clothes were amazing, playing with that whole magical rainforest theme.the clothes wer really out there, but like omg im still like speechless about it ahaha it was that goood.the ideaa worked reaaally well.people who wer at the runway would know what i mean when i say that.

i loved the shoes worn during the Shakuhachi runway.once again they used the greens and blacks mixed in with the lighter browns and whites and omg this cute black and white dotti material.i dont know why, but they used the most ugly patterned velvert material ever..but the designers wer good so its ok ahaha.i also loved the Priedrick Gray collection..drappy, flowing and with te cute little leather jackets used, looked amazing. mainly black and grey was used - either being leather or cotton.who else, um Leopold was obviously all guys, blacks and reds - which was quite different for males clothing o focus on red, hasnt been done too much, but it loked amazing.alot of shirts under the jumper with scalfs..the jumpers reminded me of the jumpers 'Valley Girl' (LOL) had whe i was like in year 10, so 2005?but it looked ALOT better.the guys wer soo hot too..there was this one, who had dark brown hair and yeah he was very very attractive ahahaha.

and i reaaaaaaaaaaally cbf crapping on anymore.SU, Alpha60, and TV wer really good too..but im not 100% sure on what i exactly saw..too much to drink ahahaa shhh

..& for the people who wer not able to check out any runways or events held by L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 08, you have no idea what you are missing out on. the people, the fashion, the atmosphere..omgggggggggg.i miss it already.most amazing weeeeeek of fashion ever

RUNWAY2_VOGUE

ok ok tonight i went to the L'Oreal Paris Runway 2 and fuck i just want to keep going again & again & again and omg..

ok about the actual runway, tonight was presented by VOGUE Australia. Designers who shocased their clothing wer
Anna Thomas, Christine, Easton Pearson, Lee Mathews, Martin Grant, Megan Park, Toni Maticevski, TL Wood and last but not least Yeojin Bae.

Megan Park started off the show, and i absolutly loved the designs. Main colours used were the normal black, creams and browns - giving it that real winter/autumn feel. lots of cequines and beading was used, like the ones your granny would have on her blouse - in a sexy way ahahaa. All the tops and dresses wer very loose fitting. Main fabric used was velvert - i normally hate velvert but the way the garmets wer put together, they really emphasised the positives of the material, showing it off at its best. Oh and i now officially love Midas shoes. next up was Christine. to tell you the trth..i didnt like it that much.the first few designs reminded me of air hostests, with the hard red hats, tight fitting outfits, moving onto the taylord black pants, big white shirts and sunnies. Definalty inspired by the whole sterotyped 'french style' sort of thng..

Eastn Pearson was pretty good. worked mainly with greens & black. i thought this should have been showcased in yestrdays runway - it linked in really well, with the colour themes and being inspired by the Japanese gueiser style. Lots of spotted material was used which i loved. here and there cequines were used..with made it even more cuter ahhaa. i LOVED Yeojin Bae's designs so so much. it was kinda like military style fitting..clean cut and perfect fit. the clothes we not so 'different' but still looked amazing. under most of the dresses the models wer wearing skivvies (however u spell it ahaha)

TL Wood worked mainly with silk - purples blacks and greens. all really simple designs with simple detail, but looked really goood. Lee Mathews reminded me of little red riding hood & all those fairytails. beanies wer used, AND SO WER A PAIR OF STOCKING THAT I HAVE ahahaa.really girly designs which i love. Anne Thomas used the most COOLEST matieral.it was like this shiny purple matelic mat stuff, and with all the lighting it looks absolutly stunning. Toni Maticevski was alot more formal and dressy, using blacks creams and golds. half way through the music changed to this mystical and fairytale like song..really girly and child-like..setting the scene really well. and last was Martin Grant - first impression ; metalic starwars style. purple, silver and blacks mainly used with massive silver ball buttons. one of the last dresses looked EXACTLY like a dress Rosemin had during winter 07, but who knows..ahaha.

& yeah i had the most amazing night like ever

mwa

ps.highly recomend the new issue of vogue.the shoot of the cover model of Australian supermodel Catherine McNeil absolutly amazing.shot in India, the colours are likee..words dont even describe.

the "Lighter than Air' shoot is fucking out of this world, taken by Javier Vallhonrat.
'Bold burst of neon and sharp shapes added extra weight to the trend towards transparency.

self_made

ever felt alone and adrift
empty to the world within you
& without you?
like a rift that cuts thin
between life and death

people talking without listening
& yet you hear, but
still the silence grows
between your world and theirs
& you don't know what to do
because life is just life to you

yet you don't know what's wrong
for maybe along
the way
you fell astray
& people kept walking
& talking
until you fell
into your self-made hell

LOREAL_MELBOURNE_FASHION_FESTIVAL

IS FUCKING AMAZING

nothing will ever beat last years sass & bide runway, BUTTTT..yesterdays one presented by Harper's Bazaar was amazing. The designers that were on the L'Oreal Paris Runway 1 ... camilla & marc, Ginger & Smart, Jayson Brunsdon, Kirrily Johnston, Leona Edmiston, Marnie Skillings and my favourite, sass & bide.

I noticed that alot of greens & blacks were being used, along wih alot of pattern work. Alot of the designs had that touch of that Japanese Geisha style, like John Galliano's designs for Christian Dior for the Spring Couture Week 2008 in Paris, and also his designs in the Paris' Haute Couture Week for Dior - not as obvious though..ahaha

Stand out designs award goes to.... SASS & BIDE.hahaha na serioues the clothes this year was lik.. omg.

wardrobe

this photo was the first photo i took that really made me stop and think about photography.i love it and all its pretty colours and designs which the materials make.

..and if you still havnt figured out what it is, its the bottom of my wardrobe

Photobucket

& oh the theme of wardrobes, the picture below is 1 out of 12 photos taken last year - an appropriation from one of my favourite photographers Anne Zahalka. after seeing her exhibition at the CCP early last year i was inspired by on of her images of a old school band called the Kingpins. i decided to appropriate it, and relating it to myself, and ended up making it into one of my studio arts final peices..

still.

Those butterflies that sing and dance inside me, exist still
Still yesterday
Still today
And still tomorrow
Still.
Love adoration and one hundred levels up from, because this is not infatuation flowing through my veins
But still, glass barriers surround me from you
I can see you, but I can't touch you
If I whisper, can you hear me?
The path to love seems so long through valleys deep and mountains high
And too thin for two.
But your happiness is mine
So if i took cupid's arrow and shattered these glass frames that trapped
you from me
me from you
and you from everyone else
and when these pieces of crystal glass reign down on me
it will set you free
Still.
And then when you walk down the path of love, for a better love,
Can you turn around, and promise me that you wont forget me?
I could promise you that...
